Excerpts from Breaking the Chain 2008 winning entries

First Place
- Charlie
"Harriet the cat ran back to the house and got her owner. So the owner talked to the cat. Harriet said the neighbors are doing dog abuse. Candace called all the police and drove their cars and got Joey. She took him to the pound Candice and Harriet went to the pound and Candice got Joey and took him home. They played morning till dark. Soon Joey became fit from all the playing. He got water, food and he did not have to live in that little dog house. It was all over the world on the news, and in the paper. Extra, extra. Cat saves dog. They lived happily ever after."

Second Place
- Belen
Harriet went to her owner Candace and Harriet purred. Candace paid much attention quickly as possible. Harriet went towards poor Joey and nice Candace followed furry Harriet. Candace saw the poor dog and talked to Joey’s bad owner. Candace told the bad and desperate owner that Joey had no shelter, no nutritious food and no good water. The bad owner said fine, you take him with you. So of course Candace took Joey with her. Joey told Harriet thank you. And Harriet the cat said you’re welcome. So friendly Harriet and Joey became mostly best friends and had every single thing like: awesome shelter, good and great water. And they, Joey and Harriet, were happy forever."

Third Place
- Sydney
The next day she told her owner Candace that there is a dog whose name is Joey. He is stuck on a chain. He also has nobody to play with and he is a very good dog. OK. Show me where he is for I could bring stuff for him. We need water and tools to get him off that chain to bring him home with us. He will be nice and warm. He will be so happy. He will be so excited to be safe and cozy because he’d been there for three years since he was a puppy. They picked him up. He loved their home because it was warm. He was not hungry anymore. He finally felt wonderful."

Honorable Mention
- Mackenzie
“I am back,” Harriet said. She was pushing her water bowl.
“What’re you doing?” asked Joey.
“I am giving you my water.”
“Why?” Joey asked.
“You need it more than I do,” Harriet said.
“Thank you.”
“I have to go,” Harriet said. “Bye.”
Harriet came back. “I brought you some water.”
“Thank you,” Joey said.
“I’m going to bed now.”
Again Harriet came back with an idea. “I will loosen that nail every day.” Four days later Harriet yelled, “Start running.”
Joey started to run and the nail on his chain came out.
“Follow me,” Harriet said. The cat took Joey to her yard and into her house. Just in time Candace saw Joey. She kept him, washed and fed him, took that horrible chain off and gave him love. So Joey, Harriet and Candace lived happily as a family.
